Background

HKIQEP was established in 2015 with the aim to transform Hong Kong into a centre of excellence in professional environmental services by supporting the creating of more quality jobs for future generations and further Hong Kong’s longstanding strengths in professional industries.

To support HKIQEP’s vision of developing Hong Kong as the centre of excellence for developing qualified environmental professionals, an HKIQEP Accreditation Scheme for undergraduate environmental programmes was launched in October 2020 after successful completion of a pilot programme. The scheme focuses on encouraging institutions to provide environmental degree programmes with appropriate breadth in fundamental environmental principles and depth in specific areas, and to forge better collaboration between academic and practicing environmental professionals. Furthermore, by better outlining the training and career paths of environmental professionals, the scheme can help attract talented students in Hong Kong to join and develop their career in the environmental industry.

To align with the Accreditation Scheme, updates to the Qualification Scheme will be required. By 2024, graduates from accredited programmes admitted within the eligible academic years applying for HKIQEP Professional Membership will require fewer years of environmental related work experience.
