Technical Seminar: A new research paradigm to tackle the air pollution in the Greater Bay Area

Dear Members,

We are pleased to invite you to join an online Technical Seminar: A new research paradigm to tackle the air pollution in the Greater Bay Area co-organised by HKIQEP and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 24 November 2021 (Wednesday).

Photochemical air pollution – characterized by elevated levels ozone and fine particles – is a key environmental issue in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and other cities of China. While urban and industrial activities are an important source of pollutants, gases and particles emitted from ocean, soils and trees/vegetation can aggravate air pollution via complex chemical and physical interactions. Understanding these interactions is important for formulating effective mitigation strategies for coastal urbanized and vegetated regions like the GBA. With the support of Hong Kong Research Grants Council’s Theme-based Research Scheme, a comprehensive research programme was launched in 2018 to investigate outstanding scientific questions regarding urban-terrestrial-oceanic interactions and implications to control strategy of photochemical pollution.

This talk introduces the objectives and scope of this research and presents some key results obtained thus far. It highlights (1) a previously unrecognized, important role of sea spray in ozone pollution and (2) ineffectiveness of past air-pollution control polices in reducing ozone pollution and additional measures needed.
