Professional Certificate on Acoustics, Noise and Vibration Control
The Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics (HKIOA) in association with the supporting organizations of The
Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management Hong Kong Branch (CIWEM-HK), The
Environmental Management Association of Hong Kong (EMAHK), Hong Kong Institute of Environmental
Assessment (HKIEIA), Hong Kong Institute of Environmental Protection Officers (HKIEPO) and Hong
Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals (HKIQEP) are proud to present the following two
elective courses of this certificate course for candidates who have passed the compulsory courses
HKIQEP members can enjoy 50% off, i.e. $2000 for each elective module.
You may find registration detail here:
Details of the Module:
Elective Module 1^: Understanding Basic Soundscape (Total: 8+1 Hours)
In the past and even now, traditional noise control approach has been frequently employed for addressing
noise annoyance. Recently, the concept of soundscape has been emerged as an alternative and/or
supplementary approach to improve the quality of acoustic environment. Soundscape approach regards
sounds as resources rather than pollutants or wastes.
This module comprises of two 3-hour lecture sessions and one 2-hour field experience session. It briefly
introduces the historical development and concept of soundscape with daily-life interactive examples. In
addition, the basic principles of mixed sounds, and audio-visual-thermal interactions as well as the related
research findings will also be discussed in light of acoustic environment design. The objective of this
course is to enrich candidates with basic soundscape concept and its latest developments, and to
facilitate candidates in applying the soundscape concept in future acoustic design.
Session E1_1: Understanding Basic Soundscape (Part 1)
Session E1_2: Understanding Basic Soundscape (Part 2)
Session E1_3: Understanding Basic Soundscape (Field Trip)
Elective Module 2^: Noise Source Measurements and Mitigations for Railway, Construction
Sites and Fixed Plants (Total 8+1 Hours)
This elective module aims to provide a practicable overview of the common noise source measurements
and mitigation measures for railway, construction sites and fixed plants. Airborne and groundborne
railway noise measurements, rail roughness measurement, track decay rate measurements, railway
noise source identification and control, sound power level measurements and noise barrier/enclosure
insertion loss measurements, trending technologies for quiet construction work, noise source
measurements and mitigation for fixed plant noise will be introduced.
- Session E2_1: Noise Source Measurements and Mitigations – Railway (Part 1)
- Session E2_2: Noise Source Measurements and Mitigations – Railway (Part 2)
- Session E2_3: Noise Source Measurements and Mitigations – Construction Sites
- Session E2_4: Noise Source Measurements and Mitigations – Fixed Plants
*assessment to be conducted for each module
^candidate(s) who passed 2 compulsory modules previously and 1 elective module should have received 40 hours of
professional education in acoustic and vibration. They will be considered fulfilling the corporate membership education
requirements of HKIOA as have been educated in acoustics or in a discipline relevant to the practice of acoustics.
