BACKGROUND

Since the promulgation of China’s Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan in 2013, the air quality in major city clusters of China has achieved remarkable improvements. However, there remains a significant gap between the current air quality and the guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization, necessitating a persistent and prolonged effort. In recent years, the increased frequency of extreme weather events driven by global climate change has had profound and complex impacts on the economic, social, and ecological development of nations worldwide. Climate change response not only presents new opportunities but also imposes new requirements for the sustained improvement of air quality.

Climate change response has become one of the extensively concerned public issues globally. The management of air pollution needs to be closely integrated with climate change response to further enhance their synergistic effects. This integration requires a systemic approach that considers the coupling effects of the environment, climate, energy, and health by transitioning from end-of-pipe control to comprehensive “source-process-end” strategies, so as to achieve synergies in pollution reduction and carbon mitigation, to enhance the capacity for climate change mitigation and adaptation, and to strengthen climate resilience, thus ultimately achieving a win-win for air pollution control and climate change response.

Since its establishment in 2007, the International Workshop on Regional Air Quality Management in Rapidly Developing Economic Regions (RAQM) has been grounded in the Pearl River Delta while embracing a global perspective. It has provided an important platform for exchanging advanced experiences in air quality management among nations. In the current context, to explore the cutting-edge scientific issues and systemic solutions for the synergistic response to air pollution and climate change, and to harness science and technology for the continuous improvement of air quality, the enhancement of climate change mitigation and adaptation capabilities, and the achievement of win-win for air pollution control and climate change response, we plan to convene the 7th International Workshop on Regional Air Quality Management in Rapidly Developing Economic Regions and the 1st Greater Bay Area Climate Forum at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), China, on May 29-31, 2024.
